Atlanta: England prepare for World Cup semi-final against reigning champions Argentina

England are set to face reigning champions Argentina in the World Cup 2026 semi-finals in Atlanta. The match, scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, at 20:00 BST, marks England’s second semi-final appearance in three World Cups. However, the team has not reached the final since their tournament victory in 1966.
England defender Marc Guehi stated that the pressure is on Argentina, given their status as world champions. This encounter will be the sixth time the two nations have met at a World Cup, adding another chapter to their historic rivalry. Past matches have been marked by significant moments, including Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal in 1986 and David Beckham’s red card in a later fixture.
Team Preparations and Rivalry Dynamics
Thomas Tuchel’s England side secured their place in the semi-final after a 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway. The match will be broadcast live from Atlanta Stadium. Eight years prior, England was eliminated at this stage in Moscow by Croatia, despite an early lead from Kieran Trippier’s free-kick.
Guehi, a Manchester City centre-back, described the upcoming match as “the game of your life.” He emphasized the importance of performing for one’s country in such a significant tie.
Tuchel addressed earlier comments made after the Norway match, where he suggested England “got lucky” and “made life very, very difficult for ourselves.” Midfielder Jude Bellingham, who scored twice in that game, responded with “Yeah well, whatever” when asked about his manager’s remarks. Tuchel clarified that he aims to demand the best from his players and does not settle for lower standards, dismissing any suggestions of tension within the squad. He explained that Bellingham’s response was likely due to exhaustion after scoring two goals and giving his all.
Declan Rice, the Arsenal midfielder, is confirmed to start against Argentina, having trained fully after an illness that affected him during the quarter-final against Norway. Jordan Henderson and Jarell Quansah are expected to be the only England players unavailable for the semi-final.
Tuchel could become only the fourth manager to reach a World Cup final with a team other than their home nation. Argentina, meanwhile, is making its third semi-final appearance in the last four World Cup editions.
When questioned about the historical rivalry between the two teams, Tuchel stated that England would not use it as additional motivation. He emphasized the team’s focus on their objectives, saying, “We know why we’re here – we know what we want.” He acknowledged the rivalry as a significant football match between two major footballing nations.
Political tensions, particularly stemming from the Falklands War in the 1980s, have historically influenced the relationship between England and Argentina. Following Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Egypt in the last 16, their players were reportedly filmed singing a chant referencing the islands. However, Tuchel maintained that his team respects their opponent and does not delve into historical events, choosing not to “make it bigger than it is.”
The Challenge of Lionel Messi
The semi-final will mark the first time England faces Lionel Messi on the international stage. Messi himself noted that facing England for the first time in a World Cup knockout stage would be a “special match.” Tuchel praised Messi’s ability to lead his team, describing it as “absolutely incredible.” He highlighted Messi’s role as a leader and key player, noting that “when Messi has the ball, the movement starts.”
Tuchel acknowledged the challenge of stopping Messi, stating, “A lot of coaches have tried [to stop Messi]. He seems to always have another gear and another solution. He’s unique.” He recognized the magnitude of the obstacle Messi presents, emphasizing that England understands “how big the ask is.”
Messi’s career has seen him achieve significant milestones, but facing England in a World Cup knockout match offers a chance to further emulate Maradona. The match’s context, including the potential for similar strip colours to the 1986 game, adds to the historical parallels. At 39, Messi’s performance in the current World Cup has exceeded expectations, with an impressive tally of eight goals, placing him alongside Kylian Mbappe as the tournament’s top scorer.
Beyond his goal-scoring, Messi’s creativity has been crucial for Argentina. He leads the World Cup rankings for chances created and big chances created, and is joint-top for chances created from set plays. He has also recorded 16 shots from outside the penalty box, more than any other player. His ability to roam and find pockets of space, even when the centre is crowded, poses a significant challenge for opposing defenses.
Against Egypt and Switzerland, Messi shifted to the right wing to find space. This adaptability could be particularly problematic for an England team that may lack a natural holding midfielder. Djed Spence, a Spurs full-back, impressed defensively against Norway and could play a key role in countering Messi’s movements, especially if he shifts to the right. Spence’s defensive capabilities and one-on-one defending have been noted, with some considering him one of England’s best natural defenders.
While Messi remains central to Argentina’s strategy, other players like Julian Alvarez, who scored against Switzerland, and Lautaro Martinez, who set up Enzo Fernandez’s winner against Egypt, have also emerged as key contributors. However, the team’s reliance on Messi is evident. Despite the physical demands of a long tournament, Messi continues to deliver crucial moments. The semi-final against England presents another opportunity for Messi to further enhance his legacy.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final between England and Argentina is scheduled for July 15.
