Newcastle United: Bruno Guimaraes’ future and transfer market activity

Guimaraes’ future at Newcastle
Bruno Guimaraes has not submitted a transfer request at Newcastle United. However, he has expressed to the club that he would be interested in pursuing an opportunity with Arsenal if an acceptable offer were to be made. This desire is reportedly driven by footballing reasons rather than financial ones, as he is currently Newcastle’s highest earner. At 28, with his 29th birthday approaching later this year, Guimaraes is said to be seeking titles, which he reportedly believes are unlikely to be achieved at Newcastle in the near future.
Despite his interest in a move, Guimaraes wants to ensure that Newcastle receives a high transfer fee if he departs. A fee around £80m is suggested as a tipping point that would compel Newcastle to consider an offer. As of now, Arsenal has not made any direct contact with Newcastle regarding Guimaraes’ availability, with all discussions reportedly being driven through agents. Newcastle is keen to retain him and considers him not for sale until a concrete offer materialises.
Transfer market movements
Newcastle United has already seen some player departures this summer, with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali moving to Barcelona and Tottenham, respectively. The club anticipates making three or four more signings. There is ongoing interest in a new number one goalkeeper, with James Trafford of Manchester City being a long-standing target. Additionally, Newcastle is looking for a full-back capable of playing on either the right or left, preferably the left.
The club’s transfer policy focuses on acquiring players between the ages of 18 and 24, typically within a price range of £20m to £40m. While they are willing to slightly exceed this range for certain targets, such as the verbally agreed deal for Johan Manzambi from Freiburg at £49m, they are not expected to spend significantly higher amounts like £80m or £90m on a single player. This approach aims to bring in younger players with high potential that Eddie Howe can develop.
In other transfer news, Manchester United has signed Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa in a £35m deal. Tielemans, 29, has signed a five-year contract after a release clause was triggered. Meanwhile, Leandro Trossard is expected to join Besiktas, with a medical pending. Tottenham is reportedly interested in signing Neco Williams, currently with Nottingham Forest. Paris Saint-Germain is also said to be pursuing Zion Suzuki from Parma, a player also on Newcastle’s radar.
Potential exits and club strategy
Several players could potentially leave Newcastle United this summer. Nick Pope is expected to depart, although interest from Ipswich has reportedly subsided. There is also a possibility that Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock could move on. While no offers are currently on the table for these three players, Newcastle would be open to their departure as part of a broader squad revamp.
The club’s strategy, supported by manager Eddie Howe, sporting director Ross Wilson, and chief executive David Hopkinson, emphasizes bringing in younger talent. This approach is partly influenced by the lack of European football for the upcoming season, which is seen as an advantage for integrating new players and allowing for more training sessions. The focus is on developing players like Sean Steur, who is considered a signing for the future and is expected to train with the first team, gradually working his way into the squad.
The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) remains committed to Newcastle United, providing assurance regarding the club’s long-term financial backing. The club’s transfer window strategy aims to avoid the issues encountered in a previous summer, which saw significant spending and some signings not performing as expected.
