Chelsea has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of Morgan Rogers. The deal for the attacking midfielder is said to be worth £117 million and is currently being finalised. This potential transfer would mark a record fee for Chelsea, surpassing the amount paid for Enzo Fernandez, and would also exceed the British record transfer fee.

Rogers is expected to sign a six-year contract, with an option for an additional year, and a medical examination is scheduled. The player, who has featured in the World Cup for England, is reportedly keen on the move to Chelsea, citing the club’s project and new manager Xabi Alonso as significant attractions. Arsenal had also shown interest in the England international, but Rogers has reportedly chosen Chelsea as his preferred destination.

During the 2025-26 campaign, he contributed with goals and assists in appearances across all competitions, a season in which Villa qualified for the Champions League and won the Europa League.

His performances led to his first senior England call-up in November 2024, and he has since played in all six of his country’s World Cup matches, starting against Panama and in the defeat to Argentina. Football pundit Paul Merson has expressed reservations about the transfer, questioning the necessity of spending £117 million on Rogers given Chelsea’s existing players like Cole Palmer. Merson noted that both players operate in similar positions, highlighting that Rogers was selected for the World Cup over Palmer because they play in the same role. He suggested that if Chelsea were to accommodate both, it might involve selling Enzo Fernandez and playing Moises Caicedo deeper, with Rogers and Palmer ahead of him. However, Merson also pointed out that Joao Pedro is another No. 10 at the club, leading to concerns about where Palmer or Rogers would play without being out of position.

Merson believes Rogers is at his best in open play, running with the ball, which might be challenging at Stamford Bridge where opposition teams often defend deep. He also mentioned the pressure associated with such a high price tag, stating that Rogers will be judged heavily on scoring and creating goals.

For Aston Villa, the departure of Rogers follows that of Youri Tielemans, who joined Manchester United. Villa has reportedly moved to sign reinforcements, announcing the arrival of Switzerland World Cup winger Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for a reported fee of just over £50 million. Arsenal, having missed out on Rogers, is expected to pursue alternative targets, with Bradley Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain being a potential option.

The analysis from The Athletic suggests that Xabi Alonso’s preferred 3-4-2-1 attacking system at Bayer Leverkusen, which utilised two No. 10s, could offer clues for how Rogers might fit into Chelsea’s setup. This system could allow Rogers to play alongside Cole Palmer, with wing-backs providing width. Alonso’s tactical flexibility has been noted, and the acquisition of Rogers, along with Marco Palestra, may indicate a move towards recreating a winning formula with an expansive back-three system.

Aston Villa was reportedly aware that they might lose Rogers but only for a significant fee. The club plans to reinvest some of the transfer money into new players, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye and West Ham United’s Crysencio Summerville among the targets. Villa has already spent over £50 million for Johan Manzambi, who is considered a similar player to Rogers.
