He emphasised that wearing his country’s shirt is the greatest honour of his career and pledged to continue giving his all whenever called upon.

The red card for Fernandez was his second yellow of the day. His first yellow card was issued in the 82nd minute for protesting a lack of a foul call on a challenge by Spain’s Rodri. The tackle on Cubarsi, which resulted in the second yellow, sent the Spanish player flipping in the air. While some reports suggest it was a rash decision, it was deemed a clear foul.
The match saw Spain control the game, though it took them 106 minutes to score. Argentina did not register a shot during regulation and finished the game with no shots on target. Spain ultimately secured a 1-0 victory, claiming their second World Cup title.
