Argentina react to World Cup final defeat and questions surrounding Messi’s international future
Following their defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez stated that the team represented their nation “in the best possible way.” This statement comes despite several incidents during and after the match, which Spain won 1-0 after extra time in New Jersey.
Fernandez received two yellow cards during the match, leading to his dismissal late in normal time. His first booking was for dissent towards referee Slavko Vincic, and the second was for a challenge on Pau Cubarsi. Despite this, Fernandez‘s social media statement did not mention the red card, focusing instead on the team’s commitment.
He wrote, “As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result. For years, this group has represented the team in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up.” He added that it was a privilege to be part of a group that consistently competed at the highest level and defended their colours with pride, humility, and commitment.
Post-match altercations and disciplinary review
The final whistle was followed by altercations involving members of the Argentina team and backroom staff with celebrating Spain players. Fifa‘s disciplinary committee has since appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate these events. Any players or coaches found to be involved could face suspension, and the Argentine Football Association may also incur a fine.
Among those who appeared to be involved were Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala. Paredes was seen pushing Spain‘s Eric Garcia. Spain‘s Gavi attempted to intervene but was pushed to the ground by Almada, and then by Paredes. Ayala also appeared to hold Garcia and strike Spain midfielder Dani Olmo.
The actions of the Argentina players on the pitch drew criticism from former England internationals. Former England captain Alan Shearer commented on Paredes‘ actions, stating there was “no place or space for that.” Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart described the behaviour as “disgusting.”
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni addressed the situation in his post-match interview, saying, “We are gracious in victory, and we must be gracious in defeat. Today, we are showing that we know how to lose.” He acknowledged the loss but emphasised that it does not diminish their journey to the final.
Messi’s future and team reception
Speculation has arisen regarding Lionel Messi‘s future with the national team, with some suggesting the final might have been his last match for Argentina. Messi, who was visibly emotional at the end of the match, posted on social media, “The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal. But I also hold onto all the good things.”
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez also indicated he would consider his international future. The Aston Villa player stated on Instagram, “Now I have to reflect on many things, see how to move forward, and decide if it’s time to step aside.”
Despite the defeat and the controversies, thousands of Argentina fans welcomed the team back with an open-top bus parade through the streets of Buenos Aires. Scaloni and 16 of his 26 players returned to the country, where they were greeted with a red carpet and a military band at Ezeiza International Airport. Emiliano Martinez was among the players who returned to Argentina, while Messi travelled to Miami, where he plays club football for Inter Miami.
Argentina had a strong run in the tournament, winning their first seven matches in North America against teams including Algeria, Austria, Jordan, Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland, and England before their loss to Spain.
In the semi-final against England, Argentina came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory, with goals from Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez after England had led 1-0 until the 85th minute.
The team also displayed a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” after their semi-final win against England.
Enzo Fernandez was a member of the Argentina team that won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
