US President questions Harry Kane’s defensive role for England in World Cup semi-final

United States President Donald Trump has commented on England‘s tactical approach during their World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina, specifically questioning Harry Kane‘s role in defence during the second half. This criticism follows England‘s 2-1 defeat, where Argentina scored two late goals to secure a spot in the final against Spain.
Reports indicated that a number of key players were disappointed with how England was instructed to finish the game after taking the lead through Anthony Gordon. The team reportedly reverted to a back five, and several defensive substitutions were made in the closing stages, which coincided with Lionel Messi inspiring Argentina‘s comeback.
Speaking at a reception, Trump referenced Kane, stating, “You have a great player in England who I’ve played golf with. And he is Harry who has been fantastic.” He added, “I think they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player. What do I know about soccer? They took the lead, and they took their best player and put him on defence.”
Thomas Tuchel, the coach, was criticised for his tactical decisions, including withdrawing two forwards and introducing defenders in the latter part of the game against Argentina. This meant England adopted a more passive stance, despite Kane remaining on the field. Messi reportedly capitalised on the space created, providing assists for Argentina‘s two goals.
When questioned about Trump‘s remarks, Tuchel dismissed the criticism. He later reiterated his stance on his tactical choices, stating, “No I don’t regret my decision. I thought we had become too passive. I was trying to help the team.”
Comments on Balogun’s suspension and World Cup success
During the same reception, President Trump also discussed his interaction with FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding the suspension of USA striker Folarin Balogun‘s one-match ban. Balogun had received a straight red card in a previous round for a foul on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic, which would have meant he missed his side’s last-16 tie against Belgium.
FIFA made the decision to suspend the automatic one-match ban. Trump recounted, “I was forced to call Gianni. I said ‘Gianni, I’d like to make a recommendation. Let the guy in the game!’ No, I didn’t say that. I said I’d like to wage a complaint.” He further commented on the outcome, stating, “it is so much better the way it worked out because there is no controversy. They [Belgium] won the game and our team had all of its players.”
Trump also expressed gratitude to Infantino and described the World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, as “the most successful sporting event, maybe in the history of the world.” Infantino echoed this sentiment, stating the tournament had “exceeded expectations.”
Infantino remarked, “The American dream, Mr President, came to reality. We united the world in America. This is not just the greatest World Cup of all times, it is the greatest human, social and cultural event that mankind has ever witnessed and we are all part of it and for this I thank you very much, Mr President.”
The interaction between Trump and Infantino has drawn attention, particularly regarding the decision to suspend Balogun‘s ban. Infantino has previously denied that Trump‘s lobbying influenced the decision, asserting the independence of FIFA‘s disciplinary committee. However, Trump‘s recent comments have led to further speculation about potential political interference.
Despite controversies, Trump and Infantino highlighted record ticket sales and significant television viewership in the US. The expanded tournament has been noted for its drama and excitement, with many visitors commending the stadiums and security measures. FIFA is projected to achieve record revenues this year, which contributes to Infantino‘s continued support globally.
The World Cup final is scheduled for Sunday at 20:00 BST.
