Manchester United considers Marcus Rashford’s future amid commitment questions
Manchester United is reportedly considering the future of Marcus Rashford, with questions raised about his commitment to the club. The forward, who spent time on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona, is expected to return to Old Trafford following his involvement in the World Cup with England.
During the 2024-25 season, Rashford’s commitment was openly questioned after he expressed a desire for a new challenge away from Manchester. Former England international Micky Gray suggested that if Rashford wants another opportunity at Manchester United, he needs to issue a clear statement explaining his desire to stay and the reasons behind his initial wish to leave.
Rashford’s Role and International Performance
While on loan, Rashford had a productive period in Spain, scoring 14 goals for a Barcelona side that secured the La Liga title. However, he will return to a United squad that has seen significant changes. Gray indicated that if Rashford remains with the club, he might need to adapt to a reduced role, potentially becoming a bit-part player.
The physical demands of the English game are also seen as a challenge for the winger after his time in Catalunya. Gray noted that the Premier League operates at a high intensity, suggesting Rashford would need to be exceptionally fit during pre-season.
Despite uncertainties at the club level, Rashford has maintained his presence in the England setup. He contributed to the Three Lions‘ third-place finish at the 2026 World Cup, featuring in six of England‘s eight matches and scoring in a victory against Croatia.
Gray observed both positive and negative aspects of Rashford’s performance for England at the World Cup. He questioned whether Manchester United could effectively utilize him to consistently bring out his best form, acknowledging that even if he stays, Rashford might not play every game.
Potential Reintegration and Transfer Discussions
Manchester United officials are reportedly exploring various options for Rashford’s future, including a potential reintegration plan. The club has also shown interest in Roma midfielder Manu Kone. Reports suggest United has considered a swap deal involving Rashford to facilitate a move for Kone, as Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini is believed to admire Rashford’s technical abilities.
However, any potential transfer involving Rashford could be complicated by his wage demands, which are understood to exceed Roma‘s financial constraints.
In a recent development, Manchester United executives have invited Rashford to participate in a documentary about the club, which is being produced in collaboration with Amazon. This invitation has been interpreted by some as a possible indication that the club might be willing to keep Rashford as part of their plans for the upcoming season, despite earlier expectations that he might be sold.
Rashford has not played for United since December 2024. He reportedly had a disagreement with former manager Ruben Amorim after expressing a desire to leave, leading to his loan spells. Barcelona did not exercise an option to make his move permanent, meaning Rashford is set to return to United after his summer break.
His future remains uncertain, with several clubs reportedly monitoring his situation. Cameras have already begun filming for ‘All or Nothing – Manchester United’ as some of Michael Carrick‘s squad have started pre-season training. The documentary is expected to continue filming until the end of the next season.
United has stated that the documentary aligns with the club’s aim for openness and transparency with its global fanbase. The film is expected to offer viewers access to the club’s dressing room and training facilities.
Despite interest from various European clubs, it is considered likely that Rashford will have an opportunity to revive his career at Manchester United next season, partly because appealing exit options have not materialized. Rashford has two years remaining on his contract.
Sources indicate that there is no ill-will from Rashford towards the club regarding his past treatment. He reportedly remains a fan of his boyhood club and maintains good relationships with several teammates, and also has the support of manager Michael Carrick.
Some reports suggest that a loan move might be the only viable option for Rashford to leave, primarily due to his wages, which could make it difficult for most clubs to match. There is also a reported reluctance among senior United figures to sell Rashford to another Premier League club, to avoid potential negative public relations should he perform well elsewhere.
Clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Chelsea have reportedly been monitoring the player. Galatasaray and Fenerbahce also reportedly attempted to sign Rashford this summer, but he was not interested, with a top Champions League team remaining his priority.
Some at Old Trafford believe that too much has happened for Rashford’s return to be successful, though many acknowledge his talent is still present, as briefly demonstrated at the World Cup. If Rashford were to leave, United would need another wide forward, and with limited funds from player sales, there might not be sufficient resources for other major acquisitions.
As it stands, Rashford is expected to join his United teammates at their six-day training camp in Dublin, which is scheduled around a friendly match against Leeds on 12 August.
