Klopp set to lead national team
Jürgen Klopp is expected to be confirmed as the new head coach of the German national team. The announcement is anticipated to take place next Friday, with Klopp taking over from Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after the team’s defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup. This move marks Klopp’s first managerial role since his departure from Liverpool in 2024.
Since leaving Liverpool, Klopp has been serving as the Head of Global Soccer at the Red Bull group. He has indicated that an agreement has been reached with his current employers, paving the way for his return to coaching. While no official finalisation has occurred, Klopp stated that discussions have progressed positively and that an announcement should happen within the next few days, ideally before the next international match.
Support from Bayern Munich president
Herbert Hainer, the president of Bayern Munich, has expressed strong support for Klopp’s potential appointment. Hainer believes Klopp is the right individual to revitalise the German national team, especially after their third consecutive early exit from the World Cup. He highlighted the need for a significant morale boost and a fresh start for the team.
Hainer acknowledged Klopp’s past achievements with Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, and Liverpool, where he secured back-to-back German league titles in 2011 and 2012 with Dortmund. Despite the historical rivalry between Dortmund and Bayern, Hainer emphasised that Klopp’s ability to motivate players and connect with people makes him an exceptional coach for the national squad. He expects Klopp to inspire the team in a similar manner to his previous roles.
Klopp, who is 59, is known for his skill in engaging both fans and players. Hainer pointed to Klopp’s talent for conveying his ideas, energising a squad, and extracting maximum effort from his players. The proposed agreement with the German Football Association is expected to extend through to the 2030 World Cup finals.

In other football news, Aston Villa continues to strengthen its midfield. Joao Gomes has joined the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers, becoming the second central midfield signing for Villa in a week. This follows the arrival of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg.
