Dallas to host France and Spain in World Cup semi-final showdown

France and Spain are set to meet in a highly anticipated World Cup semi-final match in Dallas on Tuesday. Didier Deschamps, the manager for France, anticipates a “spectacular” contest. This fixture follows previous encounters between the two national teams, including a Euro 2024 semi-final where Spain emerged victorious before going on to become European champions.
Deschamps, who is scheduled to step down after the tournament following 14 years in charge, stated that past results are not a focus for his team. He emphasized looking forward to the upcoming game, noting that France has reached “another level” and aims to reach the final. France, two-time world champions, could become the third nation to achieve three consecutive World Cup final appearances if they win in Texas. Only West Germany (1982, 1986, 1990) and Brazil (1994, 1998, 2002) have accomplished this feat.
Deschamps, who captained France to a world title in 1998 and managed them to victory in 2018, also saw his team reach the 2022 final where they were defeated by Argentina. He suggested that Spain would begin the semi-final as favorites, highlighting their defensive record of conceding only one goal in six matches. Despite this, he believes the offensive quality of both teams could lead to a spectacular game.
Spain’s Perspective and Tactical Approach
Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, downplayed the notion of his team being favorites, stating that it holds no additional meaning. He acknowledged that both are strong national teams and that the pressure to perform well for their country is always present. De la Fuente referenced a quote from Julius Caesar, emphasizing that success often requires enduring challenges. He expressed his enjoyment and privilege in his role, encouraging his players to appreciate their position and potential.
Spain’s tactical approach is characterized by controlling possession, with an average share that is unmatched in the tournament. Their patient build-up play aims to starve opposition teams of the ball and create opportunities in the final third, where they have surpassed 1,000 passes with an accuracy of 83.9 percent. This strategy also contributes to their strong defensive record.
Key players like Rodri and Lamine Yamal are central to Spain’s dynamic style, enabling quicker vertical transitions and isolating defenders. Rodri is noted for his ability to carry the ball upfield to Yamal, who has accumulated the most shot-ending carries among forwards. Spain’s midfield is seen as a potential area of strength, with Rodri and Pedri being effective final-third passers, supported by Dani Olmo.
France’s Offensive Power and Team Unity
France has demonstrated significant offensive power in the tournament, scoring 16 times in six matches. Kylian Mbappe has been a prominent figure, scoring eight goals and providing three assists. If Mbappe scores against Spain, he would surpass Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. France’s attacking talent also includes Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise.
Warren Zaïre-Emery, a midfielder for France, expressed the team’s readiness to face Spain. He noted that the current French team is different and united, with players from diverse backgrounds. Zaïre-Emery made his major tournament debut in France’s quarter-final victory over Morocco.
Deschamps confirmed that Mbappe, who sustained an ankle knock in the match against Morocco, participated in training and is available for selection. Additionally, Aurélien Tchouaméni, a defensive midfielder who missed the last two games due to a muscle injury, is also available. The semi-final match is scheduled for Tuesday.
