This fight marks Joshua’s return to the ring after a difficult period, including a tragic car accident in Nigeria last December. The accident claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, and left Joshua with minor injuries. He has expressed that he is fighting in honour of his friends.
Joshua, 36, has been working since January, focusing on his preparations. He stated at a news conference in Jeddah that he is fully focused on the task at hand, viewing the fight as a step towards a larger goal. His career record includes 29 victories, with 26 coming inside the distance, and four defeats. He has faced various opponents, including contenders and champions, and has experienced both knockdowns and knockouts.
Prenga, 35, now based in New Jersey, boasts a professional record of 20 wins by knockout and one loss. However, he has not encountered an opponent of Joshua’s calibre before. His manager, Keith Sullivan, described the upcoming contest as a “real-life Rocky moment.” Prenga has openly predicted a knockout victory against Joshua.
When asked about the possibility of being knocked out, Joshua smiled and responded, “Can he knock me out? I really don’t believe it. But only God knows that.” This sentiment reflects his confidence heading into the bout. Prenga’s sparring partner, Brandon Moore, however, believes Prenga has the power to knock Joshua out, drawing parallels to Andy Ruiz Jr‘s upset victory over Joshua in 2019. Moore noted that Prenga is a bigger man, despite Joshua being an inch taller at 6ft 6in, with Prenga recently weighing in at 264lbs.
Focus Amidst Future Speculation
Despite the anticipation surrounding a potential all-British heavyweight showdown with Tyson Fury, Joshua has maintained a relaxed and focused demeanour during fight week. He appeared noticeably more at ease compared to previous media engagements, engaging with reporters and supporters. He exchanged jokes and saluted fans, a contrast to his often guarded public appearances.
The potential clash with Fury is contingent on both fighters winning their respective warm-up bouts. Fury is scheduled to fight Mariusz Wach in Thailand on Friday. Promoter Eddie Hearn has indicated that a long-awaited meeting between Joshua and Fury is being considered for later this year, possibly in November, provided both emerge victorious and injury-free. Hearn also suggested that Joshua is motivated to continue his boxing career for another three years, potentially until around the age of 39, a shift from earlier retirement plans.
Joshua acknowledged the media’s interest in the Fury fight but redirected the focus to his immediate opponent. He stated, “We don’t want to talk about Tyson Fury. Respectfully, I’ve done all the media I can about what the future holds. Our focus is [Prenga] and his team. Let’s focus on the job. Anyone can be there on Saturday. The more tickets sold, the better.” This highlights his commitment to the upcoming challenge.
Prenga has been patiently awaiting such an opportunity, building his record against regional-level fighters. His relatively shallow résumé means he is considered a significant underdog by bookmakers. Moore, his sparring partner, believes that “ring rust is real” for Joshua, who has not fought since his knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in December.
