Morocco to host expanded TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with global broadcast reach

Global Broadcast Partnerships for WAFCON 2026

The TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2026 is set to be broadcast globally, with a wide array of media partners confirmed. The tournament will kick off in Rabat on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Among the leading global broadcasters are long-term CAF partners beIN Sport and the United Kingdom’s Channel 4. DAZN will cover Europe, while Ziggo and CANAL+ will broadcast in French-speaking Africa.

For the first time, the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2026 will be available live in the United Kingdom through CAF’s partnership with Channel 4. DAZN has also acquired the rights for the tournament in Germany and surrounding territories, marking its first time broadcasting the event. beIN Sport will ensure coverage for the MENA region, and CANAL+ will broadcast to French-speaking territories in various Sub-Saharan African countries.

In addition to these global partners, several prominent African broadcasters are involved. These include SNRT for host nation Morocco, SABC in South Africa, and AZAM Media for parts of East Africa, including Tanzania. BBC Radio will also cover a number of Sub-Saharan territories.

The tournament will also be accessible through over 18 Free-to-Air (FTA) broadcasters. This list features KBC in Kenya, AfroSport in Nigeria, MaxTV in Ghana, RTi in Cote d’Ivoire, RTCV in Cape Verde, ZNBC in Zambia, and RTB in Burkina Faso.

Tournament Expansion and Opening Matches

The TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2026 will feature an expanded format, now including 16 National Teams. This expansion is expected to make it the most exciting edition of the competition to date, with the prize money for the winners increased to USD 2 Million.

The opening match will see Algeria face Senegal in Rabat at 18h00 local time (17h00 GMT) on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Following this, Morocco will play Kenya at 21h00 local time (20h00 GMT and 23h00 East Africa time).

Potential Records to be Broken

The 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is anticipated to offer numerous opportunities for new records to be set. The tournament’s return to Morocco and its expansion to 16 teams contribute to this potential for new milestones.

Cameroon captain Gabrielle Aboudi Onguéné could achieve a significant personal record. If she participates in the match against Mali at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium on Wednesday, July 29, she would make her eighth appearance in a WAFCON final. This would surpass Nigeria’s Onome Ebi, who has played in seven editions, making Onguéné the first player to reach eight appearances in the tournament.

Nigerian players Francisca Ordega and Osinachi Ohale are also aiming for a new record. They currently hold the record for the most WAFCON titles, with five each. If Nigeria successfully defends its title, they could extend this record to six. CAF has described them as “perennial winners and overall leaders,” noting their longevity as an inspiration to footballers across the continent.

The record for the fastest goal in WAFCON history, currently held by Tunisia’s Mariem Houij, could be challenged. Houij scored against Togo just 17 seconds into their match at the 2022 edition. With 413 players expected to participate in the 2026 tournament, players will be looking to score even earlier.

Additionally, Nigeria legend Perpetua Nkwocha’s record for the most goals scored by a player in a single edition of the WAFCON may be threatened. Nkwocha scored 11 goals at the 2010 tournament, including hat-tricks against Mali in the group stage and Cameroon in the semi-final. CAF highlighted this as “an all-time high mark that remains the ultimate standard for goal-scoring efficiency on the continent – 16 years later!“

The tournament goal-scoring record is also under threat. The current record for the most goals scored in a single WAFCON edition stands at 66, set at the 2024 tournament in Morocco. The expansion of the 2026 edition to 16 teams and an increased number of matches provides an opportunity for a new goal-scoring record to be established.

The expanded tournament is expected to provide more than just a new competitive format, with several longstanding records potentially set to fall when the 2026 WAFCON gets underway.
