Chicago Fire match postponed due to air quality concerns

The highly anticipated Major League Soccer debut of Robert Lewandowski has been delayed after the match between the Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps was postponed. The decision to reschedule the game, initially set for Thursday, was made due to air quality issues stemming from wildfires in Canada.

Smoke from these fires, which are affecting the Canadian province of Ontario, spread across the United States on Thursday. States bordering Canada, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois, were particularly impacted by the haze. The air quality index in Chicago reached 597 at one point on Thursday, a level considered dangerous.

Match Rescheduling and Health Concerns

The Chicago Fire announced that the match would be moved to October 6. This decision was made after close consultation with local health experts, MLS, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and the City of Chicago. Approximately 40,000 fans had been expected to attend the game at Soldier Field, which was part of MLS‘s restart following its World Cup break.

The air quality in Chicago, while dropping to 304 after the postponement, remained in the dangerous range. According to the Environmental Protection Agency‘s standards, a level of 301 marks the beginning of a hazardous plateau, at which point outdoor activities are strongly discouraged. This situation highlights broader concerns about air quality affecting sporting events across the country.

Other major sporting events have also been affected by the poor air quality. Major League Baseball, for instance, has faced disruptions. The Philadelphia Phillies moved up the start time of their Thursday game against the New York Mets due to worsening air quality forecasts. The air quality index at Citizens Bank Park was 176, categorized as very unhealthy, 45 minutes before the game, and was projected to peak at 180 later that evening.

MLB anticipates more significant problems on Friday, with all 30 teams scheduled to play. Air quality is forecast to be in the dangerous range for games in Cleveland, Chicago, and Milwaukee. In Cleveland, where the Guardians are set to host the Pittsburgh Pirates, the current air quality was 350 and was forecast to be 313 at game time on Friday. Similarly, in Milwaukee, the air quality index exceeded 600 at one point on Thursday before settling at 337 in the evening, with similar levels expected for the Brewers‘ game against Miami on Friday night.

Lewandowski’s Anticipated Debut

Robert Lewandowski, who recently joined MLS from Barcelona after helping the Spanish club win the La Liga title, was expected to make his first appearance in the league during the postponed match. The game would have featured a reunion with his former Bayern Munich teammate, Thomas Mueller.

This postponement means that Lewandowski, Poland‘s all-time leading goal scorer, will have to wait for his MLS debut. His next opportunity is scheduled for next Wednesday against Inter Miami. However, Lionel Messi is not expected to participate in that match due to his involvement in Sunday’s World Cup final.

The widespread impact of the wildfires has led to health advisories in various regions. New York City also experienced a haze, with authorities in New York state issuing warnings about fine particulate matter that would make being outdoors unhealthy. This situation coincides with Messi‘s Argentina being scheduled to play Spain in the World Cup final in the New York City area on Sunday.

MLB has a history of postponing or relocating games due to air quality concerns. In recent years, games were postponed in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington on June 7 and 8. Additionally, a Seattle Mariners game was postponed and later relocated to San Francisco in 2020 after the Mariners and Athletics played under poor conditions. The league consults with medical and weather experts, in conjunction with the MLB Players’ Association, to assess conditions and make decisions regarding game play, particularly when air quality reaches certain numerical thresholds.
