Arsenal prepared to pursue Julian Alvarez as Barcelona move faces hurdles
Arsenal is reportedly prepared to make a move for Julian Alvarez, with sources indicating the club is “ready and willing” to act once the Argentina international signals interest in a transfer to north London. The Gunners are confident that agreeing on personal terms and a deal with Atletico Madrid would not be an issue, as Atletico would prefer to sell Alvarez to a Premier League club rather than a direct rival like Barcelona.
Andrea Berta, Atletico’s sporting director, has maintained regular contact with Alvarez’s representatives. Arsenal is also said to be prepared to exceed the current British transfer record to secure Alvarez, though they anticipate a deal might be completed for a lower amount. The club is currently awaiting a final decision from the striker.
Alvarez’s preference and Atletico’s stance
Alvarez’s clear preference has been to join Barcelona, with reports suggesting it is his dream to play for the Catalans. Barcelona previously had a substantial offer turned down by Atletico Madrid. Despite this, Barcelona is reportedly determined to secure the player, though Atletico remains highly reluctant to sell Alvarez to a direct rival.
This reluctance from Atletico Madrid to sell to Barcelona could benefit Arsenal. Reports suggest that if Alvarez decides to leave, a deal with Arsenal is more likely due to Atletico’s stance against strengthening a direct competitor and the potential for a swap deal to resolve the need for a replacement.
However, Miguel Angel Gil, Atletico’s CEO, has stated that Alvarez will not be transferred this summer. He affirmed that Atletico’s position is clear and has been communicated to the player, his representatives, and Barcelona’s president. Gil expressed his belief that Atletico is the right club for Alvarez and that Alvarez is the ideal centre-forward for the team.
Transfer record and potential swap deals
Arsenal is reportedly prepared to break the current British transfer record to sign Alvarez, which stands at £125m. Internally, however, there is a belief that a deal could be completed for less, with sources suggesting Atletico Madrid might not demand a record-breaking fee if Alvarez decides to join Arsenal.
Atletico Madrid is also reportedly exploring the market for potential replacements for Alvarez. Viktor Gyokeres has been mentioned in discussions during negotiations for Alvarez. Arsenal, however, would prefer to include Gabriel Jesus or Gabriel Martinelli in any potential swap deal, as the club still has faith in Gyokeres despite his first season.
Reports indicate that Atletico would consider an offer of £51.7m plus Gyokeres as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Alvarez. This could increase the likelihood of the 26-year-old returning to England. Atletico is expected to hold discussions with Alvarez upon his return from his summer break after reaching the World Cup final with Argentina.
Arsenal recently confirmed the signing of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, but the club continues to seek further attacking options. This pursuit follows their reported interest in Alvarez, who is considered a primary target at the Emirates.
