Super Falcons Begin WAFCON Title Defense Against Malawi
The Super Falcons of Nigeria are set to begin their campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a clear objective: to retain their continental title and qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Head coach Justin Madugu emphasised the team’s readiness for the challenge ahead, stating their focus is on achieving these goals one match at a time.
Nigeria, who hold the record as 10-time African champions, are considered favourites to clinch an 11th WAFCON title. Their title defence is scheduled to commence against tournament debutants Malawi at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.
Preparations and Expectations
Madugu stated that the team is fully prepared for the competition. He highlighted the importance of approaching every game with the ultimate goal of winning, while also acknowledging the quality of all participating teams.
Despite Malawi making their first appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Madugu stressed that the Super Falcons would not underestimate their opponents. He described the Scorchers as a quality side, noting that every team in the tournament earned their qualification and deserves respect.
Madugu also welcomed the expansion of this year’s competition to 16 teams by CAF, viewing it as a positive step for women’s football development in Africa. He believes the larger tournament offers more opportunities for talented players across the continent to showcase their skills.
However, Madugu urged African football authorities to continue investing in player welfare, coaching development, and sporting infrastructure to ensure sustained growth of the sport.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade echoed her coach’s sentiments, stating that a successful performance against Malawi is measured by securing all three points. She emphasised that attractive football alone is not enough if it does not lead to victory.
Ajibade also acknowledged the progress of women’s football in Malawi, citing their tournament qualification and the success of players like Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga in international leagues. She attributed Malawi’s rise to deliberate investment in the women’s game.
Beyond the tournament, Ajibade called for ongoing investment in women’s football across Africa. She believes creating a supportive environment will encourage greater participation and help retain more female athletes, allowing them to perform at their best when they feel safe, comfortable, and free to express themselves.
Key Players to Watch
Several players are expected to be crucial for Nigeria’s title defence. Esther Okoronkwo is anticipated to be a key playmaker, having previously contributed with goals and assists, notably in the final of the last WAFCON against Morocco. Her performance earned her the Woman of the Match award in that final.
Rasheedat Ajibade is not only the captain but also a creative catalyst whose influence extends beyond the field. She was named the Player of the Tournament at the last WAFCON. Her work rate, discipline, and leadership are considered vital to Coach Justin Madugu’s tactical approach.
In goal, Chiamaka Nnadozie is a three-time winner of the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award. Her shot-stopping abilities and organisational skills are key assets for the team.
Midfielder Halimatu Ayinde, with four WAFCON crowns, is expected to shield the defence and dictate the tempo of play, providing freedom for the attacking players. Her calm presence and ability to make crucial tackles and passes are highly valued.
Forward Chinwendu Ihezuo brings pace and physical presence to the attack. She scored three goals in the previous edition of the tournament and is now back from injury.
The Super Falcons will kick off their WAFCON 2026 campaign against Malawi at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday.
