Chelsea hold talks with Brighton over Danny Welbeck
Chelsea have engaged in initial discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding a potential deal for striker Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old forward has one year remaining on his contract at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton is reportedly open to the move, provided they receive a fair price for Welbeck. Last season, he recorded his highest Premier League goal tally, scoring 13 goals. He also scored in the campaign prior.
Chelsea’s Shifting Transfer Strategy
The potential acquisition of Welbeck signals a shift in Chelsea’s transfer approach under manager Xabi Alonso. The club has recently focused on signing physically imposing players with Premier League experience. This summer, Chelsea secured Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, a record fee for a British player, and are reportedly close to signing Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace.
Chelsea’s interest in Welbeck, a player in his mid-30s, marks a departure from their previous strategy of primarily recruiting young talent. This change is also evident in their earlier pursuit of Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, 34, and reported interest in free agent John Stones, 31. Alonso is believed to have identified a need for experienced players within the squad.
The arrival of Welbeck could also impact the futures of other Chelsea strikers, including Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu. The average age of Chelsea’s four senior strikers is 23, with a combined 269 Premier League appearances and 74 goals. Welbeck alone has 400 appearances and 90 goals in the league.
Welbeck’s Impact and Previous Club Interest
Welbeck played in all but one of Brighton’s 38 Premier League games last season, scoring 13 goals. Since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in 201 matches. His career began at Manchester United, where he scored 29 times in 142 appearances before moving to Arsenal in 2014, where he netted 32 goals in 126 games.
Reports indicate that Manchester United explored a move to re-sign Welbeck a year ago, and also showed interest a year prior to that. However, a deal did not materialise. Welbeck has scored against Manchester United since leaving the club.
As a player, Welbeck is considered a penalty box expert. Among players with 30 or more shots in the Premier League last season, only four had a better shot-to-goal conversion rate than his 23 percent, and only six had a higher share of shots on target than his 50 percent. His link-up play is also noted as effective, particularly when playing with Joao Pedro, who is now at Chelsea.
Chelsea has a history of acquiring players from Brighton in recent seasons, including Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sanchez. Additionally, several Brighton staff members, such as sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell, have moved to Stamford Bridge over the past four years.
Welbeck’s leadership qualities have also been highlighted, with Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler praising him as valuable both as a goalscorer and a leader. This experience is seen as beneficial for Chelsea’s relatively young squad.
